If we needed one more piece of evidence that our public school system could use a makeover (including raises in teacher pay and an increased use of online tools like LMSs and online course options), the latest math test results are just that.

Teaching and other jobs in the education field, once considered "recession-proof" work, have gone the way of the auto industry during this particular economic crisis.

This month alone, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 273,000 U.S. jobs went the way of the wind. Of those jobs that were lost, 29,000 were in public education.

How is it that we are actually losing education jobs at a time when we need quality education the most? Obviously, this reflects a major shift in U.S. educational standards.

The quality of our public education system has been the cause of our national success, and strong education is a value deeply rooted in our cultural heritage. But state governments, who are responsible for their own public education systems, are not in good financial shape. And as any and all federal spending is widely viewed in a negative light, it's time for schools and educators to do their own looking around for innovative ways to make the U.S. a world leader in education again.

The call for cost-effective tools like LMSs to help educators efficiently manage large classrooms and provide exciting instruction is stronger than ever, given the recent math test results.

Fourth graders across the country have not improved in math since 2007, according to the National Assessment of Education Progress (often called "the nation's report card").

Regardless of the many years of state and federal education reform efforts, less than four out of every ten U.S. fourth and eighth graders are proficient in mathematics.

Sure, we have to face the facts; there's not a lot of money available right now for education reform. Fortunately, money isn't that we need for actual reform. In order for students to gain the math and technology abilities necessary to compete in the post-recession international economy, technology like LMSs and Web 2.0 tools needs to become fundamentally imbedded in our education system.
